Global Warming and Intellectual Property: Best not Ignored by Business

APEC Business-Government Dialogue Starts in Sydney this Sunday

Sydney, January 24, 2007 -- The incoming President of the European Patent Office, and one of the key speakers at the Trading Ideas Symposium, knows that just like other major contemporary issues intellectual property (IP) needs to be properly understood and workable strategies developed.

“A lot is changing, and I see IP as analogous with global warming - something is happening, we don't agree on what it means, or whether it matters or what we should do about it.  But pulling the blankets over our heads is probably not an optimal response,” Ms. Brimelow said prior to leaving for the Trading Ideas Symposium.

As the former Chief Executive and Comptroller General of the United Kingdom Patent Office, Ms. Brimelow has extensive experience in the IP field as a regulator and educator.

“IP matters to anyone active or aspiring to be active in the marketplace.  Understanding not only your own IP options but those of others is a key tool in pursuing competitive advantage,” she said.

Taking place on January 28-30, the Trading Ideas Symposium is the first business to government dialogue of APEC Australia 2007 and will be the most significant IP event in the APEC region for the year.

Another major speaker at the Trading Ideas Symposium is Francis Gurry, an Australian who has risen through the ranks to become Deputy Director General of the United Nation’s World Intellectual Property Organization.
Mr. Gurry is a leading global figure in IP policy development and is adamant that any business looking at overseas expansion must include sophisticated IP planning in their overall business strategy.

“Operating in a foreign market means, not only protecting your own intellectual assets, but also ensuring that you are not encroaching on those of others in such a way as to attract unwanted litigious attention,” Mr. Gurry said.
“At the Trading Ideas Symposium I will be discussing the very rapidly changing landscape of IP internationally, politically, economically, technologically and geographically.”

At the Symposium some of the most influential IP policy planners and managers from around the world will discuss the potential for business to capitalize on their IP while highlighting the pitfalls of inadequate IP planning.
Other major speakers at the Trading Ideas Symposium include Jack Chang, Senior Intellectual Property Counsel in Asia for General Electric (China) and Jon W. Dudas, the Under Secretary of Commerce for Intellectual Property and Director of the United States Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO).
